There are more than 40 000 monuments of culture, nine of which are in the list of the world cultural inheritance of UNESCO (the Boyan Church, the Rocky Monasteries near the village of Ivanovo, the Domed Tomb in the town of Kazanlak, Тhe Madara Rider, the National Park “Pirin”, the Big Chandler’s Tomb, the Rila Monastery, Nessebur - the ancient city, the reserve - lake of Srebarna), 36 cultural preserves, about 160 monasteries, more than 330 museums and art galleries, ethnographical settlements and town - museums (Sozopol, Old city of Plovdiv, Koprivshtitsa, Tarnovo, Arbanasi, Bozhentsi, Etara, Tryavna, Zheravna, Bansko, Melnik).
The church of Boyana impresses by the unique wall paintings from 1259, which are taking places to the masterpieces of the European painting of the epoch of the middle ages. The frescoes of Boyana have a high artistic and indisputable contribution to the European art culture. It is located in the suburb Boyana, in 8 kilometers from Sofia.
The thracian tomb of Kazanlak - this thracian tomb is dated by the end of the IV - the beginning of the III age BC, it was recovered in 1944. Tomb consists of vestibule, corridor, and by roundly - dome vault camera. The paintings on the walls of vault camera and corridor have exceptional artistic value. It is located in the district of the city Kazanlyk.
Madarskiy rider is a rock relief image, carved on the cliffs in the village of Madara. This is the most significant remain of the monumental skill of the epoch of the early middle ages, it is a symbol of the victorious marches of the owners of the early Bulgarian state to Danube. This is the only in its kind monument for the European cultural kind of history. It is located near the village of Madara, in 16 kilometers from the city Shoumen.
Preserve “Srebarna” is a biosphere preserve, which includes the lake of Srebarna and its environment and it is created for purposes of protection of rare specific plants and animals. It is populated by rich and diverse kinds of birds of approximately 160 specific wading birds - curly pelican, black water hens, water swallows, white herons, bright ibises, wild geese, 11 specific wild ducks, 6 specific fish, tortoise, snake and others. Preserve occupies area of 600 hectares. It is located in 16 kilometers to the West from Silistra city.
Rila monastery is the most monumental cloister complex of Bulgaria of exceptional architectural and artistic merit. It is based in the X century, built anew in the XIII - XIV century, it became literary center into XV v., is filly completed to the present impressive state in the XIX century. It is located in the northwestern part of the mountainous area of Rila, approximately in 3 kilometers from the city Rila and in 120 kilometers from Sofia.
Old city of Plovdiv - the city on three hills. It older than Bulgaria itself, the city preserves, as enormous pantheon, the eternal values of its six millenial history. Under the designation Filippopolis it reached the unprecedented bloom in its development. Until nowadays were preserved the lasting and indelieble sign of classical Trimontsiuma - marble panel of the forum, the amphitheatre, the stadium, the gates of fortress wall. Bright mark left the epoch of the Bulgarian Revival. The city is an architectural phenomenon, which combines stylish houses with modesty of the paved by cobblestone by-streets.
Koprivshtitsa is an architecture-historical reserve. It is one of unique Bulgarian towns, where has kept distinctive architectural heritage of the time of the Bulgarian Revival. This is unique intellectual treasure of Bulgarian way of life, culture, and history. “Koprivstica” is hard to pronounce but it is hard to forget.
Veliko Tarnovo is picturesque situated over three hills in the heart of mountain Stara planina. This old royal city’s reflected by river Jantra already 800 years. This is the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom - 22 kings had their crown here and decided Bulgarian destiny. Tsarevec hill is a natural unapproachable fortress. On that hill regally height palaces and patriarchal church “St. Vaznesenie Gospodne”. On the hill Trapezitsa has kept until now parts of bolyarian houses and remains of about 17 churches. On the hill Sveta Gora and in monasteries in the environments was concentrated cultural and spiritual life in Bulgaria.
Arbanasi - This village is situated 4 km away from Veliko Tarnovo, in a sunny hillside. Houses of Arbanasi are like fortress and they are unique phenomenon of Bulgarian building traditions from the time of Revival. They suggest respect by their architectural expression - high durable fences, massive wooden gates, hiding-places. Priceless!
Bozhentsi is an architecture-historical preserve. Among the slopes of Stara planina, in the sunny basin took shelter itself the small village Bozhentsi. In the past legends and myths surrounded the village. When the capital went under Turkish occupation lots of Bulgarians started to look for rescuings in the forests. Bolyarka Bozhana and her children found out that place save for living. And that’s why the village received her name later.
Etara is ethnographical museum in open air. It is situated in the neighborhood of Gabrovo. Bulgarian way of living and old Gabrovo crafts from the time of Revival are still alive in this village. All that variety of colors, forms, sounds and smells, forgotten or unknown in our dynamic way of living are offering to the visitors unusual and exciting emotions.
Tryavna - It is picturesque situated along the bank of foam river, on the north slopes of the mountain Stara planina. Streets of the town, humpbacked stone-covered bridges, houses, churches, square with a clock tower and stored spirit and talent of masters from the Tryavna art school are making it unique place for visitors.
Bansko is situated downhill of the majestic peak of the mountain Pirin - Vihren. There is the largest protected territory in Bulgaria, included in the list of UNESCO for world natural and cultural heritage. You can find here the center of the Bulgarian Revival, here were preserved more than 150 habitable and cult buildings. And in the middle of the town you can see 30m tall tower with belfry and clock, which is raised above them.
Melnik - in the southwestern part of the mountains Pirin, in the fortress, which was being formed from the natural sandstone cliffs, there is located one of the smallest bulgarian towns. Today Melnik, fanned by the glory of his legendary past, attract many guests, meets them with delicious wine and conquers them with eternal love.
